Trinidad and Tobago Technical Official (Badminton)
PJ Williams began his officiating career as a local badminton umpire in 2011. In 2014, he was assessed and graded as a Trinidad and Tobago National Badminton Umpire. One year later, in 2015, he officiated at the Trinidad and Tobago International Tournament and was appointed to umpire the Women’s Singles Final as a National Umpire.
Also in 2015, PJ Williams and Dr. Grice were tasked by the national badminton board with developing tournament regulations for Trinidad and Tobago. As part of this initiative, they also created a National Ranking System for badminton players participating in local tournaments.
In 2016, Williams was selected for assessment as a Pan American umpire in Peru. Following successful completion of both the theory and practical examinations during the Pan Am Junior Championships in July 2016, he was promoted to Pan Am Umpire.
In 2017, he applied for Pan Am Referee assessment held in Markham, Canada. After completing the intensive seven-day assessment programme, he earned the designation of Accredited Referee – Pan Am.
His first overseas appointment as a Referee came shortly thereafter in the Dominican Republic, where he officiated at both the Junior International and International Series tournaments. In 2018, he was also appointed Referee for the Suriname International tournament.
During the COVID-19 period from 2019 to 2021, international badminton activity was significantly reduced, limiting the number of tournaments being conducted worldwide.
In 2022, Williams received an invitation to serve as Deputy Referee at the Pan Am Senior Individual Championships in El Salvador. The Head Referee at the event was undergoing assessment for Pan Am Referee Certification. Following the tournament, Williams was informed that he had been recommended as a suitable candidate for assessment at the next level — Pan Am Certificated Referee.
In April 2023, he accepted an invitation to undergo assessment for promotion to the highest regional refereeing level. After successfully completing the assessment process, he was officially promoted later that year to Pan Am Certificated Referee. In achieving this distinction, he surpassed five referees from the region who were senior to him at the time. As of May 2026, PJ Williams remains one of only five Pan Am Certificated Referees in badminton across the Americas.
Since attaining Certified Referee status, he has been appointed Referee for all major Pan American continental badminton tournaments held within the region, including the Pan Am Senior Individual Championships, Pan Am Cup Team Championships, and Pan Am Junior Championships.
To date, PJ Williams has officiated in 30 international assignments and 38 local assignments as a Referee.
He holds the distinction of being the first and only Badminton Referee from Trinidad and Tobago as of May 2026, and only the third Referee from the CAREBACO region to achieve this level.
