Barbados to host International Badminton TournamentMinister of Sport pledges support
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados; February 01, 2019: Barbados’ Minister with responsibility for Sports, the Honourable John A. King, M.P., fully endorses CAREBACO 2019, an annual badminton tournament that is slated to be held in Barbados this year (August 15-29).
“Regional badminton players annually look forward to CAREBACO and year after year, our Junior and Senior National Badminton teams represent us well, bringing home results and medals to be proud of. This year, Barbados is thrilled to welcome the region to our shores. We also expect the presence of international players, since this is an Olympic qualifying year. The tournament is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and is therefore open to all countries to participate,” Minister King stated.
The Minister, whose portfolio also includes Creative Economy and Culture, met with members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the tournament recently, with the intent of ensuring that all elements are in place to host a memorable event.
“We are grateful for the support of the Ministry, the Barbados Badminton Association (BBA) and the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA), as we work to together to host this tournament. Our players bring us pride regionally and globally, and are eager to play on home soil this year. We invite members of the public and Corporate Barbados to also play their part through support,” said Dionne Haynes, Chair of the LOC. To get involved through sponsorship, email [email protected].
Badminton grew in Barbados in the early 80s and the country was first represented regionally in 1985, when CAREBACO was hosted in Guyana. Since then, Barbados has been represented at the Central American and Caribbean Games, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games, under the umbrella of the BOA. Badminton has been embraced by the Barbados National Sports Council as one of the many sports taught in schools.
